The exact amount \n \n of funding awarded through this grant will not be known until the FY10 State \n \n budget has been announced.

Background
-
This is a State grant that provides funding to enhance existing drug court
programs. The grant period is from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.

Analysis
-
The Muscogee County Juvenile Drug Court has had a positive effect on the
juveniles and families served in particular and the community at-large in
general by reducing juvenile drug use, juvenile criminal activity and
encouraging participants to become productive members of society. As one of
the original Juvenile Drug Courts in the State of Georgia, the status of the
Muscogee County Juvenile Drug Court is raised. The citizens of Columbus can be
proud of the work their community is doing to ensure children have the
opportunity to live up to their full potential.

Legal Considerations

The Columbus Consolidated Government is eligible to enter into a contract with
the Judicial Council of Georgia for the funding of this proposed grant.

Recommendations/ Actions

Approve a resolution to authorize the City to submit an application for, and if
awarded, accept a grant from the Judicial Council of Georgia Standing Committee
on Accountability Courts for operational purposes for the Juvenile Drug Court
Program and to amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the grant
awarded.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR, AND IF AWARDED,
ACCEPT A GRANT, OF A DOLLAR AMOUNT TO BE DETERMINED, FROM THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL
OF GEORGIA STANDING COMMITTEE ON ACCOUNTABILITY COURTS WITH NO LOCAL MATCH
REQUIREMENT AND TO AMEND THE MULTI-GOVERNMENTAL FUND BY THE AMOUNT AWARDED.
WHEREAS, funds have been made available from the Judicial Council of Georgia
Standing Committee on Accountability courts for the purpose of funding the
Juvenile Drug Court; and,
WHEREAS, the Juvenile Drug Court operates on a team concept, but also, as a
community collaborative effort to address the needs of youth abusing drugs;
and,
WHEREAS, the Judicial Council of Georgia Standing Committee on Accountability
Courts does not require a match.
WHEREAS, the dollar amount of the grant will not be determined until the grants
are awarded by the funding agency.____________
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
That the City Manager or his designee is hereby authorized to submit an
application and if approved, accept funds from the Judicial Council of Georgia
Standing Committee on Accountability Courts for operations expenses, or
otherwise awarded, and to amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of
the grant awarded.
