Background
By bringing an arsenal of resources, information, and determination to the

table, boards play a critical role in moving cities and organizations forward.

The most effective boards acquire members who understand their role and duties,

are actively engaged in the work of governance, and accept accountability for

the position they have been given. Board membership is a serious

responsibility, and often the most willing to serve and capable individuals

selected are not adequately prepared for this key position. Some are not aware

of all that board membership encompasses. And as with the most unseasoned,

successful leaders, everyone has room for improvement.

For that reason, the Cunningham Center for Leadership Development proposes a

training partnership with the City of Columbus by which board members -

prospective, newly appointed and long standing - can raise their qualifications

to serve our great city as board members. This venue of training is also

designed to create a pool of eligible, certified, applicants standing ready to

serve.
Analysis
This training program goes beyond typical board orientations which address

organization-specific history, mission, vision, strategy, staff, initiatives,

and the like. Rather, it focuses on professional development specific to

serving on any board - proficiencies often assumed to be in place, but which

can be strengthened and enhanced.

~Individuals would be trained to be more effective in their roles as board

members, thus creating a pool of prospective, creditable board members willing

and able to serve.

~Through the Cunningham Center for Leadership Development at Columbus State

University and its ties to the University System of Georgia, the training would

yield a certification status, thus creating more value for the individual.

~The City would/could require certification training for potential and newly

appointed board members for City boards. For existing board members,

certification training would be at the request of the respective Executive

Director.

Financial Considerations
Training will be provided at a cost of $1,850 per session and will include two

4 hour sessions per year with the attendee or the attendees respective

organization to be responsible for an additional $30 per person materials fee.
