Background
-
The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is required to update all
Georgia County Maps every five years in accordance with Georgia Code Section
32-4-2. Official map, list, and records; rules and regulations. The Official
Georgia County maps that are prepared by the DOT only show "County street
networks" during which process most streets within the urban boundary of
Muscogee County were not shown. The DOT sent us a letter dated September 30,
2009 asking the City to designate all streets and roads as County roads to be
shown on the DOT Muscogee County Map.
-
Analysis
-
Most of Georgia's consolidated City/County governments have designated all
streets and roads as County roads in order to have them shown on the DOT County
Map. In consultation with the City Attorney, the Engineering Department
recommends simply rewording the two City Code sections described above to
describe the City's "Official Street Map, Consolidated Government of Columbus,
Georgia, is hereby adopted as the official street map for Columbus - Muscogee
County, Georgia".
