Background
The Georgia U.S. Highway 27 Association is organization consisting of

representatives from Catoosa, Walker, Chattanooga, Floyd, Polk, Haralson,

Carroll, Heard, Troup, Harris, Muscogee, Chattahoochee, Stewart, Randolph,

Clay, Early, Miller and Decatur counties. The Association was formed many

years ago to coordinate and expedite efforts for the enhancement of economic

development, promotion of tourism and protection of cultural and scenic

resources along the length of U.S. Highway 27 in the State of Georgia. The

organization has not been active in recent years. Several counties along this

corridor have expressed an interest in revitalizing the Association to promote

the area and to take advantage the opportunities that will be available from

growth along U.S. Highway 27.
Analysis
Columbus is a key stakeholder along the U.S. Highway 27 corridor.

Participation in the Association will be beneficial to the City in our effort

to promote tourism in the area and economic development. The cooperation and

coordination exhibited by the counties along the Highway 27 corridor as

exhibited by participation in the Association will be a factor considered by

the State of Georgia when the organization submits a One Georgia Grant

Application.

Peter Bowden, President and CEO of Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau has

been actively involved with this Association in the past to promote tourism.

The appointment of Mr. Bowden to represent the City in this effort is

consistent with the primary mission of his organization to promote tourism for

the City. His knowledge and experience of tourism along with his past

affiliation with the Association makes him a logical choice to represent the

City in this effort.
Financial Considerations
There are no costs associated with the City being involved with this

organization.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement
Legal Considerations
Council is the approving authority for all contracts.
Recommendations/ Actions
Authorize the Mayor to execute a Memorandum of Understanding for the City to
