Background

On August 24, 2008 the Mayor received and e-mail from Denise Oldham, 921

Crockett Drive, complaining of several incidences in delayed response time by

Public Safety due to confusion with street names. On September 4, the

Department of Engineering sent out 30 surveys recommending changing the names

of portions of the two streets such that the name would be continuous.

Surveys were returned opposing the proposed street name changes(13 not

supporting, 1 supporting). A public meeting was held on October 21, 2008 at

the Pop Austin Receation Center with a representative from the Department of

Engineering and Columbus Police Department. Councilor Red McDaniel was also

present. The residents were generally all opposed to the name change. It was

recommended that a prefix be added to the portions of the streets proposed for

name change, North Abbott and East Crockett. A second survey(114 total) with

three options was sent out. The options included the original proposal of

changing the names such that the streets were continuous, the second option was

to change the conflicting portions to a completely new name and the third

option was the North Abbott and East Crockett proposal. Seventeen(17) surveys

supported the North and East option, 8 supported changing the names to be

consistent, 4 supported new names and 6 surveys were returned that were

conflicting.

Analysis

To minimize future delays for Public Safety and prevent a name change along the

roadways that conflicts with other street segments, it is recommended that

portion of Abbott Avenue from the intersection of Turner Road/52nd Street be

changed to North Abbott, that portion of Crockett Drive where it intersects

with Abbott Avenue be changed to East Crockett Drive and that portion of Abbott

Avenue from the south right of way line of Turner Road to the north end of

Crockett Drive be changed to Crockett Drive.

Financial Considerations

The Traffic Engineering Division will install new street name signs to reflect

the name changes.
