Background

The City has been pursuing efforts to improve Veterans Parkway, from Moon Road

to Cooper Creek Road, in anticipation of the new Northside elementary school

scheduled to be opened in August. In working with Georgia Department of

Transportation officials, the plan calls for the widening of this section to a

three lane roadway, with improvements to the Moon Road/Williams Road

intersection.

Analysis

To expedite this project, the City will contract with the school district's

contractor to construct the road. The roadway improvements will help elevate

potential congestion problems associated with the drop off and pick up of

children during the school year. The project will begin at the new school

intersection (Cooper Creek Road) and continue southward to Moon Road. Complete

construction of the project should be completed by late August or early

September.



The full, complete reconstruction of Veterans Parkway from Old Moon Road to

Turnberry Drive for four lane, with medians, is now scheduled to start in

2007. The project is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

Financial Considerations

Constructions costs for this project is not to exceed $900,000. Funding is

available under SPLOST and Paving Fund accounts.

Approve the resolution authorizing the City Manager to enter into a Memorandum

of Understanding (MOU) with the Muscogee County School District for road

improvements to Veterans Parkway, from Moon Road to the intersection of Cooper

Creek Road and the new elementary school entrance.
