Background
Gateway Road and J.R. Allen Parkway are being improved to accept the increased
traffic produced by the new Gateway Road Walmart. The Zoning Ordinance for
this development defined the improvements to be completed by the Walmart
development which is being constructed. A review of the surrounding roadways
identified the need for two additional improvements.
Analysis
Gateway Road was a two lane roadway without curb and gutter. The Walmart
development is improving it to four lanes from the new entrance roadway
northeasterly to the J.R. Allen Parkway. Walmart lighting of their parking lot
did such a good job that there is no light on Gateway Road which is especially
dark near the J.R. Allen Parkway approach. The increase in traffic creates a
safety issue at night time with the new laneage and motorists not being
familiar with this area. Hence, we recommend installation of street lighting
as a motorist safety measure along this segment of Gateway Road.
Financial Considerations
Funding for this improvement is available in CIP Project 50324 Road
Improvements.
